In a bid to find a solution to the vexed Chakma-Hajong citizenship issue in Arunachal Pradesh, the All Arunachal Pradesh Students Union has offered olive branches to the Chakma and Hajong refugees in the state.
Clearly stating that the AAPSU will not support granting land rights to the Chakma-Hajong refugees, the students’ body leaders proposed for a designated area to settle the refugees with all basic amenities like housing, health care, education and other facilities.
The AAPSU held a meeting with representatives from the Chakma and Hajong communities to hold deliberations on the matter. Subimal Bikash Chakma, President of the Committee for Citizenship Rights for the Chakma-Hajong of Arunachal Pradesh while attending the meet thanked the AAPSU for the initiative in a bid to settle the over five decades old issue.
It may be mentioned that AAPSU has been sternly opposed to granting of citizenship to the Chakma and Hajong refugees despite the Home Ministry clearing granting of citizenship rights to Chakma and Hajong refugees. The Arunachal Pradesh government however has always had reservations over the issue.
