In a bid to tackle the menace of contaminated fish imported from outside the state, stringent steps are being put in place by the Assam government to lift the ban on imported fish.

The ban on import of fish will end on July 21 and traders can beign importing fish from Andhra Pradesh or any other state thereafter.

However, minister of state for Health Pijush Hazarika warned that if formalin is found in the fish, those responsible can be jailed for up to 7 years and even fined up to Rs 10 lakh.

Moreover, going ahead, the fish will be checked in trucks before they find their way into the markets of the state.
