Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma cruised through with an astounding victory in the South Tura bypolls defeating his nearest candidate Charlotte W Momin of the Congress by a margin of 8,421 votes. The Congress candidate polled a total of 5,235 votes.

Meanwhile, independent candidates John Leslee K Sangma and Chris Kabul A Sangma secured 2,211 votes and 897 votes respectively.

Conrad’s sister Agatha K Sangma who vacated the South Tura seat paving way for the Chief Minister had won by a margin of 1603 votes by securing 6499 votes.

Significantly, the NPP’s vote share has increased in the latest bypolls by over six thousand votes.

However, the National Peoples Party suffered a setback as five time MLA Martin M Danggo lost the by-poll against UDP’s Pius Marwein by over three thousand votes.

Danggo had represented the constituency five times as a Congress MLA before finally switching to the NPP.

The UDP candidate secured 13,097 votes while NPP candidate Danggo secured 10,097 votes.
