The Congress in Northeast received a massive jolt with two top party leaders resigning, one from the party, the other from the post of state Home Minister, after serious differences with the top leadership.

The first to resign was 4–time Meghalaya chief minister and former MPCC president DD Lapang who alleged that the AICC was reluctant to let him continue working for the party citing his age.

The next to follow was Mizoram Home Minister R Lalzirliana who was earlier issued a show cause by the party to explain whether he was cozying up to the rival MNF.
